T he world’s eyes may be on Rio for the Olympics, but on the other side of the world, in West Sumatra, Indonesia, another traditional sporting event has been taking place. Its participants will win no gold medals; their fame and glory will fade while the shelves are lined with autobiographies of Usain Bolt. This is Pacu Jawi. Held every year in muddy rice fields to celebrate the end of the harvest season, the sport sees jockeys balancing barefoot on wooden planks grab hold of the tails of charging bulls and skate across the sludge. May the odds be ever in their favour.
