Women across Saudi Arabia rejoiced this week after King Salman issued a decree that allows women to drive from June 2018 onwards. Until then the ultra-conservative kingdom will remain the only country in the world that bars women from driving. Some did not wait for the decree to be implemented and took to the roads after the announcement on Tuesday.“Saudi Arabia will never be the same again. The rain begins with a single drop,” said Manal al-Sharif, a female activist who had previously been arrested for driving. Female rights activists have campaigned for over two decades to gain the right to drive.
